About

Sheemaro

Sheemaro ran a MongoDB 8.2.6 environment with available disk space limited to approximately 50 to 55 GB, while roughly 140 GB of historical data was identified for archival. The data need to be backed up and moved to Amazon S3 within the client's approved maintenance window.

Business Challenges

Critically low disk space met a large volume of archival-eligible data, with a narrow window to act.

Critically low disk space

Available disk space was limited to approximately 50 to 55 GB, leaving little room for continued operations.

Large volume of historical data

Roughly 140 GB of historical data needed to be identified, archived, and moved off the primary environment.

Narrow maintenance window

Backup and migration activity had to operate within the client's approved maintenance window, 7 PM to 11 PM.

Single production database

All work had to be performed against a single production database with no room for error.

Project Objectives

Geopits was asked to free up OS-level disk space by archiving historical MongoDB data from April 2025 to September 2025, moving backups to S3, and reclaiming storage through MongoDB compaction.

Key Goals:

  • Archive historical data, April to September 2025, without disrupting operations
  • Move archived backups to Amazon S3 within the approved maintenance window
  • Reclaim disk space through targeted MongoDB compaction

Solution Provided by Geopits

Geopits executed the archival, migration, and compaction work in staged, time-boxed sessions across the approved maintenance windows.

Collection identification

The top 10 collections were identified based on the client's archival criteria.

Pre-archival indexing

Required indexes were created before archival to improve query performance.

Windowed backup and S3 migration

An additional partition was used for temporary backup storage, with archived backups moved to S3 during the approved 7 PM to 11 PM window, over 3 days.

Targeted compaction

MongoDB compaction was performed on the top 6 collections during the approved downtime.

Results & Business Impact

The archival and compaction work directly resolved the disk-space risk, with the full effort delivered inside the client's approved windows.

Key outcomes

128 GB disk space reclaimed

Approximately 128 GB of disk space was successfully reclaimed.

Disk utilization cut nearly in half

Disk utilization was reduced from 87% to 56%, significantly improving available storage capacity.

Available space more than tripled

Available disk space increased from 55 GB to 183 GB.

Historical data archived

Historical data from April 2025 to September 2025 was successfully archived and moved to S3.

Delivered within the maintenance window

The full archival, migration, and compaction activity was completed within the approved maintenance window.

Conclusion

Geopits archived roughly 140 GB of historical MongoDB data to Amazon S3 and reclaimed approximately 128 GB of disk space for Sheemaro, cutting disk utilization from 87% to 56%, entirely within the client's approved maintenance window.
